Goal: Exercise Fun

Lose weight and have fun doing it with these workouts.

You may hate cleaning the bathroom, mowing the lawn, or going to the doctor, so what do you do? You put them off for as long as possible. Next thing you know, your bathroom is disgusting, the grass is higher than your knees, and that knee pain you could have gotten resolved with a quick doctor’s visit now needs rehab.

You may go through phases of commitment to things like chores or good health, but if you don’t enjoy doing them, you’re more likely to procrastinate. The same goes for exercise. The research is clear that regular exercise is needed for good health, but so far you haven’t enjoyed the workouts you’ve tried. That needs to change!

Why? Because studies are clear that people who enjoy their workouts are more likely to reach their fitness goals.

So how do you find a workout you actually look forward to doing each day? By broadening your horizons! Do some research, ask your trainer for suggestions, and experiment with different workouts until you find a few you enjoy.
Here are a few ideas to get you thinking outside of the box.

Rock Climbing

Rocks aren’t just for looking at. Start climbing them for a total body workout. Once relegated only to the hard-core outdoors people, rock climbing is now a workout you can do at an indoor climbing gym. Challenge your muscles, endurance, and creative thinking skills with rock climbing. Just be ready to have muscles hurt that you didn’t know you had.

Rec League Sports

Exercising with friends is one of the funnest ways to get fit. Join a rec league for some friendly competition. Softball, volleyball, dodgeball, basketball, or kickball are a few options to choose from. See what your community has to offer and sign up!

Hiking

Outdoor enthusiasts may find hiking to be their new favorite workout. Hiking trails take you away from the busy city into nature and the fresh air. Go with a friend and you may find your new favorite way to hang out.

Dancing

Whether you sign up for a class, have a dance party in your living room, or play Just Dance with the kids, dancing is a fun way to get your exercise. Like the idea of learning with others? You can find dance classes to any variety of music, whether salsa, ballroom, hip hop, or ballet. Even if you don’t want to dance, adding music to your workout will make it more enjoyable.

Martial Arts

Develop your self defense skills while getting exercise with martial arts classes. A large variety is available to choose from, whether you prefer karate, kung fu, judo, taekwondo, tai chi, or kendō. As an added perk, martial arts are a low-impact form of exercise. So you can improve your balance, coordination, and fitness without putting excessive stress on your joints.

Rollerblading

When it’s nice outside, why not go rollerblading? Find a friend who also owns a pair of inline skates and hit the pavement. Rollerblading is a fun workout that gives your legs and core a serious workout. If you live close to town, you can even use your blades as alternate transportation!

Stand-Up Paddleboarding

Anyone who lives near a body of water should give stand-up paddleboarding a try. Abbreviated SUP, stand-up paddleboarding is a great way to work your abs, back, and arms while enjoying a nice day out on the water.

Yoga

There’s hot yoga, power yoga, outdoor yoga, acro yoga, boxing yoga, vinyasa yoga, and antigravity yoga to name a few. With so many types of yoga to choose from, you should be able to find one you enjoy. Choose your preferred yoga type and enjoy, knowing you’re building strength, relieving stress, improving flexibility, and challenging your coordination.

Capoeira

Looking for a new and exciting workout that burns serious calories and is serious fun at the same time? Try capoeira. With roots in Brazil and Africa, this art form combines dance, music, martial arts, and acrobatics into one non-stop workout.
